Jack Niko is League’s leading top scorer

Who is this youngster who seems to score a goal in every match?
20 year old Jack Niko hails from Lounapektuan, Whitegrass area in the Western part of Tanna where he is born to parents Joe and Jenny Niko. After walking out of the Vanuatu Football Academy, as a member of the first intake, he moved to settle at Erakor Village in 2011 where he is welcomed into the Wanemut family as his new guardians, purposely to be close by his mates and to pursue his football career with the fellow youngsters from Erakor. Since then Jack Niko speaks fluent Erakor dialect.
On Saturday, Jack Niko who is the leading goal getter during the first round of the Port Vila Football League Championships showed just why he is currently dubbed one of the country’s top striker, when he found the net after being on the field of play for only five minutes.
The younger of the Kaltak siblings, Tony Kaltak had opened the account of the EGS FC after beating the Amical FC defenders to lob the ball into an empty net in the first period of play, a score line the EGS carried to the end of the first 45 minutes play.
After the breather the boys in yellow Coach Simeon Roqara introduced his Super Sub Niko in place of Tony Kaltak. On 70 minutes of play, Niko received a great pass from strike partner Jean Kaltak and rippled a shot past Chikau Mansale to increase the boys in Yellow margin. Minutes later, Niko came close to increasing his lead when he watched in dismay as his goal bound shot reverberated off the bar.
Towards the dying minutes to play, Amical FC captain, Fene Masauvakalo pulled one back for the boys in red.
Daily Sports spoke to Jack Niko after the match Saturday to find what motivates him to this point where he is the leading goal scorer in the PVFA championships. “When you are playing in a team like the Golder Star, everybody has the ability to find the net.
“And when there is a healthy competition between strikers, it brings out the best”, stated a rather shy Niko.
And as to why he is always coming off the bench, he replied, “I get the benefit to sit out and watch how the game evolved which allowed me to figure out the weakest points in the opposing defense setup.
“That’s why everytime I get off the bench, I am able to score some brilliant goals like I did against Shepherds, Ifira and on again on Saturday against Amical FC”, said Jack Niko.
To date Niko’s personal tally is 6 goals and with four matches left before the end of the
Championship season, the fans may just be able to witness more goals scored by this Tannese youngster who currently leads the top scorers spot in the PVFA.
